In 1994, he was the first master from Poland to be awarded the title of ’’Shihan” from Japan, from the International Karate Association. As one of the first and youngest in Poland, he began jiu-jutsu training in 1970 and two years later in 1972, at the age of 15 he began to study karate. As an undergraduate at Warsaw University, he co-founded the Academic Sports Society Karate Club (AZS). In 1980 he qualified as an instructor at the first ever karate instructor’s course held in Poland and continued training at the Warsaw University.
In 1981 he was a referee at the 1st Championships of the Polish Karate Federation. He also founded an AZS Karate Club during postgraduate studies at SGGW (Agricultural University). He has trained many Warsaw instructors from different styles and almost a hundred black belts in Poland and other countries. He taught karate in Germany as a German Karate Association (DKV) examiner, as well as in Lithuania and the Czech Republic.
Among many Masters he trained with were Hideo Ochi, Tsuguo Sakumoto, Takemasa Okuyama, Fumio Demura and Takayuki Kubota. When he met Soke Takayuki Kubota (after twenty years of training karate with 3rd dan in the Shotokan style, awarded to him by Master Hideo Ochi), he decided to follow the Gosoku-ryu style. He was the President of the Polish Karate Association and now is the President of the European Budo Association.
Shihan Piotrkowicz is also a well known expert of kobudo, tanto-jutsu and kenjutsu (5th dan Toyama-ryu battodo, 6th dan tameshigiri). He introduced Japanese swordsmanship battodo and sports chanbara to Poland.
Master Piotrkowicz is author of many books and video materials about Japanese martial arts. Now he is preparing the third edition of his bestseller the ’’Karate Handbook”.
